THE WORLD HAS ENDED.

Find resources.

Stay alive.

TRUST NO ONE.

Unknown journal is a solo post apocalypse TTRPG in the same universe of it's sister game Unknown Signal. In this universe mysterious beings have taken over the world, and they can take over human's bodies, making it really hard to distinguish between humans and monsters. It is best to ignore anyone you see, you never know who is human, and who is actually one of them. You'll need to look for resources, deal with monster encounters and maybe find some people you can trust.

To play you'll need...

  • Print the pdf double sided flipped along the short edge.
  • If your printer does not print to the edge of the page, trim the white border.
  • Take a pair of scissors and cut out along the dotted lines to separate the character sheet and the event tokens.
  • Place the event tokens in an opaque bag.
  • Fold the remaining piece in thirds so it looks like a pamphlet.

You'll also need:

  • A pencil
  • An eraser
  • A journal
  • One six sided die (1d6)

Extras!

Those who decide to donate 2 dollars or more will have access to a print your own journal template. Basically it's a custom made journal design for this game. It will have a character sheet at the beginning of each page so you don't have to erase the pencil all the time. It's a small extra to thank the people that decided to donate.

I took some pictures of how the extras look when printed so you can see how it looks. Despite having a laminator I decided to not laminate the cover since I know most people don't have one and I wanted to show a more realistic image of how it would be to print these files in a home printer. I also don't have the best camera so keep that in mind.

In these pictures I used the following materials

  • Cover: Offset white paper 300gsm
  • Pages: Offset white paper 75gsm
  • Binding: Saddle stitch (You can also use a stapler)

Unknown universe

This game is a part of the unknown universe series. All of the games in this series will take place in the same post apocalyptic world and feature the term Unknown in it's title, as a way to signal that they're all from the same universe. Currently there's only one other game in this series, the Unknown Signal Visual novel. I highly recommend you play it for additional context.

I have been absolutely loving this game. I featured it in a video review of multiple rpgs and thought to share it with you. Seriously thanks for the awesome game.

Also the checkerboard/use of numbers ((not sure what to call it)) is super novel.

Mentioned around the 2:13 area.

Thank you so much for the video! I'm glad you're enjoying the game and I'm happy you liked the event tokens system I was very proud when I came up with it since I had never seen any other game use something like it.

Thank you again for playing! <3

I've really been enjoying this game, although I am yet to finish a playthrough with an ending.

Firstly, the little pamphlet is beautifully put together. The design is lovely and everything is really compact so it's easy to toss all the tokens and pamphlet in an envelope and take the game on the go. The gameplay is also very easy to understand. I like how open ended the events are and how simplistic everything is, since it allows for more freedom in storytelling.

One thing I will note is that it is very easy to get a game over very early on, which I guess is accurate for an apocalypse setting, but less fun from a gameplay perspective. The first two times I tried to play, my character ran into a monster on day one (due to bad rolls) with no weapon and died. This could probably be remedied by allowing the character to have some starting supplies.

Overall, highly recommend!

Thank you for the critique, I'll take it to heart! I'm working on a sort of rework of the game that will still be small, but expand on a few elements I felt like could be changed and one of the things I already wanted to work on was the monster encounters. I wanted to make them more fun and give the player a better chance to fight. I'll also add starting supplies, I think that will be a good idea!

Thank you so much again for your comment! I really appreciatte it!

I'll be looking forward to the rework!

The layout and design on this is lovely! Nicely done!

Thank you so much! <3

I'm confused by the event tokens.  The way the numbers are currently arranged, printing double sided will result in tokens with different numbers on each side.  For example, there will be lots of tokens with 01 on one side and 04 on the other.  Is this a mistake, or is the player supposed to play both numbers on the token, or just pick one, or what?

Thank you for pointing this out! They are meant to be different and you're meant to use the side that you saw first. I rewrote the instructions a couple times and I realized that this information is missing in the new version. I'll fix it right away!

[EDIT] This information was added to the instructions.
