Expansion discussion


Hello! I just wanted to make this post discussing some ideas for a future expansion of this game since I feel like it has potential to expand this into a slightly bigger game. While I love the one page version, and I plan to take it as a freebie if I ever go to events again, I feel like this game has potential for expansion. I wanted to use this post as a way to discuss what I would like to add to it. I won't necessarely add all of these. I'm just throwing all my ideas here to see what others think.

More events

The first thing is I'd like the event tokens to be more varied. Right now a lot of the events are getting water and getting food. While it is important that many of the events involve getting water and food since it's crucial for the player's survival, I'd like to have the flavor of those events to be a bit more varied. 

Instead of simply writing "you found some water", I'd like the event descriptions to be "You have found an empty convenience store, after scavenging it for goods you have found a bottle of mineral water, this should last for a whole day". While mechanically they are the same, I feel like they would improve the roleplay side of things. 

I'd also want to have a couple random events, besides getting sick and it raining. Maybe you could find new places that you're allowed to return to, things like that.  Same goes for story events, developing your relationship with Joanne, Lidya and the Librarian might feel more meaningful with more events.

Combat system?

This one I'm still in doubt. While I like the simplicity of what we currently have, I feel like this could add more story elements to it and make it feel more like an RPG. I think the system would revolve around resisting the monsters mentally while attacking them physically. 

A combat system would also add the possibility of creating different enemies adding to lore. Some of these monsters are possessing humans, some are not. Who they are posessing would affect your combat, for instance a monster possessing an athlete would be much harder to deal with than a monster posessing your average joe.

Character creation

This is one thing I planned to have from the start but had to cut off due to space. I wanted to have variations of the same layout with different pre made characters with disadvantages and advantages. The events would also have been changed to better reflect that character. 

One example would have been a character named Robert. He's a family man, he's big and rough but also warm and kind. He has a little daughter, his only sunshine in this horrible situation. He'll do anything for her and she gives him strentgh making him more resitant to those creatures attempts to take over, but at the same time he has to care for her, meaning he'll use up more resources.

I loved that idea initially, but it would't fit well in the 1 page version. In an expansion I could allow players to pick a premade character or even to make their own. The idea I have is to allow players to pick advantages and disadvantages that would cost points. As long as the final balance is not negative you can create the character as you wish. If the game does include a combat system this would also be the moment to decide on their attributes just like a traditional rpg. 

Playtime

I also had this idea for the original, but cut out due to space. I wanted to have different set of event tokens depending on how long you want to play for. Want to finish this solo RPG in 1 hour or two? Cut this set of events out! Want an experience that will take a whole day of play? We got you! Want a more guided long experience of multiple days? We also offer that. I wanted to have this sort of customizable experience so it would suit different people's needs, and it would be a matter of deciding on which random events would go on the game and how many.

I'm posting this mostly because I wanted to hear from others what they liked the most about the game, and what they didn't and what they think of this possible expansion. What ideas you liked, which ones you didn't, and if you have any ideas of your own, feel free to comment! I'll consider it! scars, flashbacks, for the characters, hirelings, sidekicks, buliding a safehouse maybe.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I really like the idea of including flashbacks and scars as a way to flesh out the character.
