Irene wakes up in a strange place only remembering passing out on the subway. She has just been kidnapped and has no idea of what to do. All she can see is a board with some names, a lever and a board with rules:

Rules

  1. Once the game starts one random player will be picked to be punished. The light besides their name will then become yellow.
  2. Any other players can help them escape punishment by pulling the lever.
  3. However they will recieve a non leathal, but very painful electric shock.
  4. If any player pulls the lever the light will become green, however if they get punished it will become red.
  5. The game ends after 5 rounds.
  6. Good luck players!

Help Irene decide if she should pull the lever to save others, or if she should stay quiet and let others take the pain, but remember, you can't pull it many times. Everyone has limits, and Irene can't take all four shocks herself.

This game was made for the O2A2 VN Jam 2024

This means I had a couple limitations when creating this Visual novel.

  • Up to 1000 words (mine has 999 exactly, a close call!)
  • One sprite (the board with names)
  • One background (the room she is trapped in)
  • One song (Creepy atmosphere by Nathaniel Garner)
  • One sound effect (Electric shock sound by PixaBay)

About the builds

Unfortunately I don't have the means right now to test the game for linux and Mac. I included the renpy exports in case anyone wants to try it out. If you find any errors please inform me, I'll try to fix it. The web version should work for those users in case there are any issues with those builds.

Ooh, a start to a death game!! I'm really curious to see how the rest will play out! 100% hoping you'll expand it one day <3

Really creative idea! I'm impressed how much you managed to say about these characters with just button presses and a few lines of Irene's narration. The parts left open ended make me curious to see if you decide to continue this.

Thank you so much! <3  I hope I can expand this project later on!

What a fun little game ! It's entertaining and well executed. It's also very pretty to look at. I hope you continue the game make other rounds someday because I would love to see what else you/the game has in stock !

Thank you! ( > o <) - ♡

Really clever concept and well-executed! The tension is there from the beginning, and I thought the "blinking" effect that brought everything into focus was a great touch. It was cool that the choices felt like they had a balance of reasoning and chance. Glad I got to save everyone on my first try - phew! Brilliant art style too - loved the juxtaposition of the bubblegum-colourful palette against the dark theme.

Thank you so much! ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡

This was really fun to play! Using the limitations of the jam (one screen, not showing the other players) as a device to keep the player uncertain was a really cool idea and I think you pulled it off great! It was also interesting having the one sprite be the board instead of another character! I love the art too! Overall, this is a great game with a really unique premise! It'd be fun to see more if you decide to expand it to a second trial!

Neat game! The premise is pretty intriguing and I like that the player has some significant choices to make based on limited information. The art style looks great as well! The option to turn flashing lights on or off at the beginning was also appreciated! I only wish the ending was a bit more conclusive even if this was a result of the limitations of the game jam. Overall, I still had a good time with this! Great work on this!

Thank you so much for the feedback and for playing my game in the video! I really enjoyed seeing someone else play my game. I also wanted to make a more definitive ending in the future, maybe expand and show the second trial and the reactions of the surviving players to the decisions you made. Again, thank you so much for playing!
